Transformational Bible Reading

Years ago I was a Bible college student taking a full-load of credits. I was eager to study scripture but soon I found myself settling into a mere academic relationship with the word that was empty of transformational power. Thankfully one of my professors gave a simple daily assignment that reconnected me to God’s heart in the Word and forever changed my experience in scripture. That assignment had us journal our answers to (4) questions we asked for every chapter we read in the Bible.

In this video I want to share with you the (4) questions that upgraded my Bible reading and served as a catalyst for spiritual transformation.

These questions come from (4) verbs Paul used 2 Timothy 3:16 to describe the supernatural power of scripture in the life of the believer. It’s able to teach us; reprove us (expose error), correct us (realign us) and train us.

Question #1: What does this passage teach me?

About the character and nature of God? About humanity and the world we live in? Often when we approach scripture we are looking for positive encouragement. But scripture is more than positive thinking. It unveils truths about the God of the universe and the kingdom He is leading. I love this questions because it lifts our eyes to a higher place.

Question #2: What error does this passage expose in me?
This is the question of reproof (to expose error). When we invite Spirit’s ministry of reproof, we invite the Spirit to expose that which keeps us from a greater experience of God’s goodness and love. Reproof is core to spiritual transformation.

Question #3: How does this passage realign me?
This is the questions of correction. Whenever the Spirit reproves, He always provides grace for course correction. Correction is not punishment; correction enables us to live in fullness. Correction restores us to God’s highest and best!

Question #4: What does this passage train me for?
The Holy Spirit is always preparing us for the good works that He’s designed for us. This question orients us for mission with God which is the ultimate supernatural adventure.

There you have it. (4) questions to catalyze spiritual transformation as you read scripture. Reading the Bible doesn’t have to be a place of boredom and confusion. It is possible for you to understand scripture, hear the heart of God in it and be changed.
